May: According to the poll, I should be writing a short story each day based on a writing prompt.
June: I saw Ironman on opening weekend and I missed the little bit about staying for the entire credits.
July: The first obedience class went well.
August: During the last two weeks I finished a book for a December book review, About Alice by Calvin Trillin, and Gimp by Mark Zupan and Tim Watson.
September: Saturday my husband carried Sammy into the basement.
October: We woke up at 5:30am to take hubby to the airport.

Book Meme

This one is always fun to do:

* Grab the nearest book.
* Open the book to page 56.
* Find the fifth sentence.
* Post the text of the next sentence* in your journal along with these instructions.
* Don't dig for your favorite book, the cool book, or the intellectual one: pick the CLOSEST.

I didn't do it on purpose: it's just something that happened.

There were only two sentences on page 56 of The Real World Hawaii True Confessions and that was the second one. :) It was within arm's reach. I'd have to bend down to get Night by Elie Wiesel.

The Office Character Meme

Which Office Character Are You?

You are Pam. You are sweet and likable, but your shyness makes it hard for you to express yourself sometimes. Regardless, you are always there for your friends and will usually come out of your shell to help anyone.

Twelve Months Meme

So now that's almost halfway through January I thought I'd post my end of the year meme for 2007. Below is the first sentence of each month excluding memes and quizzes. I'm only using public entries.

January: On my way out the door last week my dad says, "Your mom has a log of everything she's ever printed on her iMac.
February: Zilla hasn't eaten anything since Tuesday morning.
March: My drabble is now available for viewing on Shine.
April: Earlier this week I commented to my husband how Gwen Stefani reminded me of Holly Madison (one of Hugh Hefner's girlfriends) in her American Idol interviews.
May: Today was a stressful, long day at work.
June: So tomorrow is the home inspection.
July: The last few days have been a whirlwind of activity but nothing's really been done.
August: The heat has managed to kill most of the flowers in the backyard.
September: The first issue of Niteblade is available on-line for viewing (with ads) and it's available in .pdf form for $2.
October: Finally got down on paper my most current writing goals.
November: The tentative tile for this year's novel is "The Best Fantasy Novel Ever Written".
December: We were out of the house by 9am and back by 9pm.

Considering most of my year included Zilla's diagnosis and chemotherapy, finding and buying a house, and writing these are some good first lines.

  • I can't whistle.

  • To lose weight I've tried Weight Watchers, a vegetarian diet, and Dr. Atkins.

  • I love to eat potatoes - french fries, hash browns, potato wedges, baked potatoes, mashed, boiled and home fries are just a few!

Critics would give my life a B+!

Welcome to the pinnacle of average budget movies. That's right, short of a few million dollars to burn on cars, lawsuits and animal training, this is probably the highest you could get. Not that that's a bad thing, the B+ rating is much higher than most movies. You take a normal life and incorporate enough Hollywood cliches to woo the critics over to your side. Sure, you don't have Matrix-like funds to blow up five third-world countries in your pursuit of the most amazing action possible, but you've done very well with what you have. Between dodging lawsuits with fake names and buying time bombs that stop at :01 on their own, you make life look much more exciting than it actual is, and the critics love you for it.

Another Meme!

Keepers
0 science fiction, 9 supernatural, 3 sexy, 0 literary
You scored as Keepers!

Everything changed for Gil Stewart on the day he saw the old man die. Gil had witnessed the bizarre accident on the highway and stopped to help. The old man couldn't be saved, but just before he died he clutched Gil’s shirt and whispered a warning: "The Keepers are coming!" That was when Gil’s nightmare began. At first he thought it was merely odd, a series of weird coincidences. Household pets started acting strangely. Zoo animals escaped. But now he can see a pattern emerging, a chilling reminder from a past that he can't -- or won't -- remember. As the true horror becomes clear, and terror builds upon terror, Gil can only await the coming of the Keepers.

The Letter M

This entry is brought to you by the letter "M"

This is how it works: Comment on this entry and I will give you a letter. Write ten words beginning with that letter, including an explanation of what the word means to you and why. [info]rhondaparrish gave me the letter M.

Madonna - Yes, as a child of the 80's I had the black rubber bracelets just like her. For Christmas in eighth grade my friend gave me lavender eye shadow and the Like a Virgin record album. I was crazy about Madonna. I thought of her as an independent woman going out and getting what she wanted. I loved it that she could change her look easily and create the fashion trends instead of following them. Now that she and I are older I still like her. I think she's entitled to her privacy especially since she has children. The other day I listened to Like a Virgin and thought she had a very babyish voice. Whether or not she could sing when she first got started in the music business, she's certainly taken the steps to make sure she can keep doing it for a while.

Manga - I didn't really discover manga until my husband and I began to date. My two favorite series have been Maison Ikkoku and Ranma ½. They storylines are different from each other but both have touched my heart.

Mary Kay - Technically this should probably be an entry under the letter K but I want to talk about Mary Kay! It was about the age of 12 or 13 that I seriously got into make-up. I had Barbie and Cover Girl stuff until my mother took me to Lazarus. At one of the counters I was given a full makeover and I wore contacts for the first time. Not long after that I discovered Mary Kay. Except for the long stretches of time where I wore no make-up I have been a Mary Kay girl. I can only guess I went to a party with my mom. The products have been good to my skin.

Marriage - The union between two people is never 100% smooth. It does make it easier if there is love, trust and openness as the foundation. More and more my husband is my rock. I know even when I'm moody or not at my best that he'll forgive me and love me. I've been especially moody of late due to my work situation. We've been together for so long I can't imagine my life without him.

Modulation - I can't stand monotone voices. When I give the phone skills presentation at work to new employees I note that most of the clues a person has in a regular conversation are missing when speaking to someone over the phone. It's very important to be able to express yourself with just your voice. The person can usually tell if you've given the same instructions fifty times in a row by the tone of your voice. I hate it when people sound like an answering machine.

Moon - The moon is usually a natural wonder I look at when my husband is driving us from one destination to another. When I was little I was told if the moon had a ring around it then it meant snow was coming. The only time I've mooned someone was during a class trip to Europe.

Motherhood - I've always dreamed of being a mother. As a child my fantasies revolved around being the object of an undying, all consuming love or having an undying all consuming love. Motherhood fits the second category. Mothers make many sacrifices for their children. Right now I'm not sure I'll ever be a birth mother or anyone's mother at all. It makes me sad but I really try not to think about it.

Movies - When I was younger I used to go to the movies as a form of entertainment or a way to while away my time. Since college I've been exposed to more movie types (experimental, foreign, etc.) and have found they can be truly moving experiences. I usually notice the story or the performances of the actors and actresses over the direction. I am a romantic and an idealist so my favorite movies of all time are old ones or romances.

Museums - My mother loves old things and I've certainly had an appreciation for them. I think on nearly every vacation I've taken there has been at least one stop made at a museum. Probably the museum I remember the most is the Anne Frank Museum in Amsterdam. It was odd to be walking in the same building she lived in for so many years. Even seeing it, it was difficult to imagine what it must have been like to live there in secret. I like natural history, paintings, clothing, sculptures, furniture, textiles, photographs, etc. A good museum is a place that takes responsibility for the items it has been entrusted so other generations can enjoy them.

Music - I suppose everyone has a soundtrack to their lives. The first grown-up album I remember having was one by the Monkees. My mother bought it from one of my older brothers' friends. One night when my other brother was watching me, I decided to wash it with vanilla pudding. It never played right after that. One of my earliest memories of our first house is playing records in my brothers' room. I suppose they would still be in school. I would put on Captain and Tennille, the Carpenters, or Cher and sing my heart out. My oldest brother used to make me sing Queen and Ted Nugent for his friends. The first record album I bought with my own money was Shawn Cassidy's Under Wraps at Gold Circle.
