New Orleans Library System

In my email today was notice about sending books to the New Orleans library. They are in need of donated books to restock their shelves. Books they can’t use would be given to destitute families or used in fundraising. Sounds pretty nice, doesn’t it?

As my usual skeptical self I had to investigate. I couldn’t find anything on their official web site asking for book donations. They are taking monetary donations at this time. They’ve set an initial goal of $150,000. I’m not sure how much money they have raised at the moment. 40 staff members have gone back to work. It seems the internet access available at the libraries is one of the main sources available to residents who don’t have it in their homes. The web site indicated the lines for the internet computers form before the libraries even open. Several branches are still closed.

As always, be careful with donations, etc. There are some people who take advantage of the goodwill of others. If you wish to do something for the library system, you can check out the Friends of the Library web site at http://nutrias.org/. They have before/after pictures of some of the libraries and state what their initial uses for monetary donations.
