Roller Skating

Last night my husband and I went to a roller skating birthday party for a forty-something. The local skate place has adult only skate a few nights a week. It was last night from 8pm to 1am. We were meeting people there at 10pm. We showed up around 9:40pm.

When I was in the 8th grade my friend, Wendy, and I would go every Friday or Saturday night. My mom got me white leather boot with orange wheel skates secondhand. It was fun and I never got around to learning how to skate backwards. I think I learned how to skate through an elementary school party or some such. I never got asked to do the moonlight couples skate.

So part of me had a fantasy that I'd finally get a couples skate with my husband. I never made it onto the rink. My plan was to practice on the carpet and then go on to the rink. My husband watched me. I think he was not thrilled at the prospect of skating but figured he had to since it was a skating party. I skated back and forth. And fell a lot. Had I not been wearing pants I would've skinned my knees pretty bad. The last time I fell I gave up because I no longer felt safe. I was really convinced I was going to break a wrist or something else. He asked, "Aren't you supposed to keep your feet straight?" And he told me that while watching me he noticed my left foot was straight and my right one was at a 45 degree angle.

Needless to say I did not feel supported. He ended up holding hands with the birthday girl for a few hours as they went around the rink. He made a few rounds on his own.

My shoulders and arms are so tight and sore today. And all I did was fall.
