Last night I went to the opening night party for the William Wegman Funney/Strange exhibit. He's been in town since Monday to look over the galleries. We actually went to the opening remarks, saw most of the exhibit and went home exhausted and hungry.
I got to meet Jeff Smith last night and hear about his recent work trip to Spain. I was too shy to introduce myself to Wegman and say hello. We didn't realize he was signing books, posters, etc. until we had seen most of the show and it was nearly 9pm. I was going to get in line while hubby purchased the catalog of the show but I didn't want to stand next to "crazy lady" who I'd already encountered once during the evening. She was declared the last autograph so we put down the catalog and walked out of the bookstore. We said goodbye to one of the ushers and when she heard we didn't get anything signed she went on a mission!
The security guard let her in line and I don't know what she said to Wegman but it must have been really nice. Hubby was standing next to her with the biggest happiest grin on his face and it was all I could do to keep from crying.
We paid for the catalog on the way out and I thanked the usher. She really made my night and it was a truly sweet, unselfish act on her part.
So now I have my very own Wegman dog portrait and a wonderful memory.
