Once upon a time there was a dead, flat squirrel who came to live with us. He was grey and very flat. We called him Bucky. First he stayed in the hard road. If the weather was nice his body was warm and if the rain came down, then he was wet. The road was too hard so he went to visit my neighbor. He stayed in their yard and enjoyed the cushion the grass provided him. Unlike most squirrels who hide with their food during the winter, Bucky didn't need to store his food or find someplace warm. All winter he stayed in their yard. He became stiff from the cold but never lost his flat shape. One day after the snow melted away, and the daffodils had bloomed, he decided that he had visited with my neighbors enough. He came to our yard and stayed for a bit. Our front yard has more shade because we have a large tree growing next to the walkway to our porch. As the days passed and the sun grew higher and higher in the sky, he decided he wanted to feel the warmth of the sun again. He went to stay on the grass between the sidewalk and the road. The nice thing about Bucky as a guest is that he never complained, never smelled, and never made any noise. But he seemed to be exhausted from his stay. His tail didn't have nearly as much fluff as it once had. I rang up a nice man who came to see Bucky. The man scooped him up and put him in the back of his truck for parts unknown. I am sure he was taken to a place with plenty of grass and trees that Bucky would have liked.

Last night his cousin, Chunky, came to stay with us. He is a dead, plump squirrel who has come to live with us. He's brought some friends with him that I don't like very much. The flies buzz and buzz around him, trying to get him to play. I will telephone that nice man today.
